I think I like my dog better than most people. What kind of person does that make me? Is it because she listens so intently to every word of the long & dramatic stories I tell her? I think so. Of course I like my blog readers just as much as my princess Zelda…so don’t think for a second that I don’t! You’re listening too…right? Well, we’ll see.
A possum went after Zelda’s food the other night. Okay…yes, the food should not have been sitting in the backyard. Zelda’s dog trainer encourages her to have 15 minutes to eat her food before it gets picked up and taken away. Well, mornings are busy around my house so that rarely happens. It sits out all day and that possum thought it could take a few nibbles. I let Zelda go out to the backyard because I thought she had to go potty. Turns out she was going outside to defend her territory and food!
The poor possum moved fast to hide behind the air conditioning unit in the backyard. I could see it’s bold little eyes and razor sharp teeth in clear view. It sure wasn’t pretty. Anyhow…how do you stop a 70lb Doberman from devouring a pesty night creature when you are not willing to put yourself in harms way? First, I told Zelda straight faced that she would not be sleeping with me if she killed that possum. That sure didn’t stop her from her mission. She kept at trying to reach the possum from where it was wedged up at. I tried reasoning with Zelda but that wouldn’t work either.
Finally, I did what any normal person would do. I sent out my oldest child to bring my dog back in safely. I sure didn’t want Zelda getting scratched up by the possum. Now…how is it I wasn’t thinking about what could happen to my daughter, Brittany??! I know…bad mom. But hey…both my kids are brave souls. Aside from Colton getting attacked by many different species of birds in his lifetime, my kids are animal lovers to the core. I knew Brittany could handle it and Colton too, if he would have had his shoes on. It was a judgement call and I made it and Brittany, without hesitation, saved my day! I stayed indoors with my sliding glass door protecting me from the giant beast outside. With Zelda safe inside, I thanked Brittany and took a deep breath of relief.
I told this story over and over and each time I said how enormous that possum was. Brittany said it was tiny. Smaller than our cats in fact. I didn’t remember it like that. The possum came back the next night. Another brave soul went out and took some photos of it. I guess it was small. Is it going to be coming back every night? Are you still with me here? Or did I lose you? Maybe Zelda is the only one who listens to my stories…
If you are still reading this, take a look at my princess and then that mean food-stealing possum down below. Who would have won if Brittany hadn’t have saved the day?
Today is Brittany’s 16th birthday! My baby girl is growing up!!! It’s heartbreaking really.
You are the most special girl on the planet! You have the sweetest spirit and demeanor of all the teens I’ve ever met. I was so lucky to be blessed with a daughter who always strives to do her very best. I am so proud of your strength, sweetness, academics (another straight A report card this semester), bravery (especially the other night when you saved Zelda from that gigantic possum) and just simply for being you! I can’t believe this day is here.
I remember the rainy morning when you were ready to come into the world back in 1993. I had no idea when I entered the hospital that day what joys were ahead of me. Having you changed my life in the most profound and pleasant way possible. You have been the best baby, child & teen a mother could wish for. Your beauty is beyond description. Thank you for making my job raising you so easy. I hope your 16th birthday is the sweetest one ever!
All my love,
Mom (oh…and I know your dad feels the same way) 🙂
Brittany and I on her very 1st birthday:
Zelda (almost a possum eating girl)
The GIGANTIC food-stealing possum:
Did you see those teeth??! So…it was tiny. Brittany was right. Moms don’t have to be right. They have to know what’s best. And I do. I assure you, I do. I know my daughter is the VERY BEST daughter that ever has exisited!!! I also know she is going to have the BEST birthday ever!
